Saddle pads have always been a big question mark for me. There are so many options, all of them claiming they do kind of the same things. How do you know which one will actually be the best choice for your horse?

I spoke to SaddleRight on the phone, and they were SO helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. Their pads are custom made, so you get the right size and style for your horse and saddle. After sending in photos of my horses back's to double check, and measuring the lengths of my saddles, I got to select my favorite color and my order was submitted!

Their Western pads can have so many fun color options. I went with my beloved burgundy with black wear leathers. My English pad is brown glove leather, but they also have a suede version where you can select colors. We've now been using these pads for about 9 months, and they pretty much look the same with just a little wear from the saddle on the suede!

Our Experience with the Pads

Since receiving our pads we have done tons of trail riding. I noticed a difference right away with Tucker, as he became less opposed to wearing a saddle. He prefers to be ridden bareback, but sometimes a saddle is just needed! I only recently bought a new treed saddle for Trubee, so most of our experience with the western pad has been with a treeless saddle. Trubee definitely moved out more freely with the SaddleRight pad. I got to experience the most forward-moving, wonderful trail horse that he's ever been as he got in amazing shape riding the mountain trails we lived by last year! I did use a Navajo pad underneath during this time, simply because my horses were insanely dirty all the time at this location.

Something that I appreciate about these pads, is how thin they are...they don't disconnect you from your horse like some super thick pads do. But they are not lightweight - they are actually shockingly heavy for how thin they are! The core material is so dense, that if you push on one spot, you will not feel the pressure on the other side at the point that you are pushing. They distribute the pressure, which is how they eliminate those pesky pressure points.

Now that we have a traditional saddle again, Trubee has felt amazing in the arena. I feel confident when I tack up that the SaddleRight pad is providing him the support and comfort that I would expect from such a well-established company. Did you know they have over 34 years of experience? For such a high quality product, I was really surprised I hadn't heard of them before! But I am also super out of the loop on most things in life, so it might simply be me living under my little rock!

Why We Love SaddleRight
So, here's a breakdown of what makes SaddleRight pads so special:

The core material is guaranteed never to compress, deform or degrade
The core material moves and recoils with the movement of your horse
No memory foam, gel foam, or air bladders are used in their pads - these things actually significantly INCREASE pressure points on your horse
SaddleRight also offers a trade back program, where you can send your old SaddleRight pad back and purchase a new pad at 50% off. Pretty cool!

The material is also great to clean - I pretty much have only brushed off any dirt or sand.

Be sure to take a look around their website to learn more about what they can do for you:

Katey's Inside Scoop

Riding Warehouse Blog Post 3

Meet RW customer and avid dressage rider, Katey Augsburger. Katey is a local Dressage Trainer and has been riding in the SaddleRight Saddle Pads for over ten years. Read on to get the inside scoop on why she loves these saddle pads and why they are absolutely worth every penny.

How did you first come across or hear of this brand?
"This brand was first recommended to me by an Equine Acupuncturist that I used for my horses. His experience was that any horse that went in these pads never had a sore back. I was intrigued, so I bought one."

How has your experience been with the SaddleRight pads over the ten years that you’ve used them?
"I love my pads! The first one I got over ten years ago, I use it daily on a minimum of five horses and have never had any issues with it. It still looks new and works just as well as when I first got it!"

Why did you initially choose this brand?
"As a dressage rider and trainer, I am well aware of how hard we ask our horses to work. I have great saddles to ride in, but every horse’s back is a little different, and every horse doesn’t always have their own saddle. These pads are known for not allowing any sort of pinching or pressure points to affect the horse’s back and I wanted my horses to be as comfortable as possible."

Have you noticed any differences from before using these saddle pads?
"The biggest thing I noticed since using these pads is the shock absorption in riding big moving horses. Sitting the trot is comfortable for both me and the horse and my saddles never shift or move. My horses never have sore backs and I have the chiropractor out significantly less to adjust my horses."

Are there noticeable differences in the way you and your horses move?
"I notice a difference in the quality of my horse’s gaits and the comfort level of sitting the trot. The pad seems to absorb the concussion of both rider and movement. The fact that my horse’s backs aren’t ever sore, and I know my saddle will never pinch or dig into them makes me happy."

How has the saddle pad affected your horses?
"They are happy and never sore in the back. I still have my saddles flocked yearly, but I know in between that they will be comfortable."

How does this saddle pad differ from other saddle pads?
"I believe they are way more comfortable for the horse and rider and last for significantly longer than other orthopedic pads."

Why is there a high price point on the saddle pads compared to others?
"The quality is key in the making of this pad and the fact you will have it forever."

How is the overall quality and durability?
"Great! I have had mine for over ten years and have used it daily on multiple horses. It still looks new!"

Are the saddle pads flexible or stiff? Do they conform?
"The pads are firmly flexible. They conform slightly to the horse’s back, but don’t allow for any pressure to come through the other side of the pad to the horse’s back."

What is the best way to clean these saddle pads?
"I clean my pads with mild soap and water and give them plenty of time to dry. I also always have a thin cotton saddle pad between my SaddleRight pad and the horse."
